Set in the busy contemporary settings of Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi and Bangalore, this story delves deeper into the themes of love, loss, sacrifice and second chances. It is an interconnected narrative following the lives of different couples/characters navigating through their problems and loneliness.
In Metro..In Dino, Basu tries to create an emotional tapestry where new modern relationships unfold traumas, dilemmas and are constantly shifting moral obligations of sort. What these characters have in common is not just shared space but shared trauma and unease.
Konkona Sen and Pankaj Tripathi are bound by marriage where he shows signs of infidelity and she tries to teach him a lesson by doing the same but fails eventually since that it morally wrong. Similarly, Ali Fazal and Fatima Sana Shaikh are childhood sweethearts who have given up on their dreams to chase the definition of a “happy well-settled family”. Their story is about negotiating professional ambition and embracing personal chaos with subtle elegance.
Aditya Roy and Sara Ali Khan play a young couple struggling with commitment and personal advancements. In the end, she comes to terms with her feelings for him and they agree to give it a shot. Lastly, Neena Gupta and Anupam Kher’s story revolves around nostalgia, grief and “what ifs”/”what could have been”.
The background scores by Pritam serves the purpose of storytelling between the scenes to describe the character’s feelings. And the screenplay in the film tries to touch up on the anxieties present in the contemporary city-like world – ghosting, cheating, work-life imbalance, etc.
The film tries to strike a balance between realism and personal desires. Metro..in Dino captures fleeting truths and urban living, even if it is not what the audience likes. If it is compared to Life in a Metro, it falls short in certain parts but overall is a good attempt.
