Love slasher- horror? Sit Back! A24 is back with the X trilogy which makes a striking appearance with its final movie “MAXXXINE” – a sequel to the first X trilogy movie “X” itself came in 2022 followed by its prequel “Pearl” and now the third picture of thrill makes its appearance in the silver screen. “MAXXXINE” once again staring Mia Goth leaves the audience thrilled and stunned in the theatre. As the title suggests Goth plays the character of Maxine Minx in the movie who is now an aspiring adult film star finding her way through Hollywood with the dream of being a superstar that shines brighter than the Sun. However, her dreams are haunted when comes a new serial killer in town who threatens to reveal her dark past. The title of the movie remains interesting as the ‘XXX’ suggests Maxine’s career as an adult film artist in the plot. Mia Goth remains exceptional for her admiring work in all three of the films as Maxine in “X” and “MAXXINE” while being Pearl in “PEARL”. Audiences remain intrigued by the double role played by the actress in the trilogy as they admire the parallels drawn between both the character of Pearl and Maxine. It’s refreshing to witness a profound parallel within the movie, transcending mere horror and thrills. The characterization is exceptional, as Maxine and Pearl both share a burning ambition for stardom, yet they are propelled into starkly different roles—one as a protagonist and the other as an antagonist. While Pearl descends into psychopathy fueled by religious trauma and unfulfilled dreams, Maxine’s unshakeable determination never falters, regardless of the audience’s reception. This contrast not only enhances the narrative but also delves into the complexities of human ambition and the consequences of its pursuit. Through this intricate character study, the film offers a poignant commentary on the duality of aspiration and the divergent paths it can carve. The new movie delves deeply into Maxine’s pursuits for her dreams all while being pursued by the night stalker. What lends the film its raw and authentic edge is the inclusion of Richard Ramirez the man featured in the movie who happened to be an actual serial killer and rapist during the time in which the movie is set in. This chilling touch of reality amplifies the horror, making the narrative even more gripping. Overall the movie did great in satisfying the audience with the exposure to the slasher genre and the grotesque ambience does justice!
